Our Story
Inspired by 5-year-old Sidney Olson, we believe everyone deserves access to safe and active communities. To make that possible, our work is focused on designing safer streets, pushing for safer vehicles, and making kids more active.
Our story began when a truck hit and killed Sidney in an Andover intersection. She was a soft-spoken, loving girl with springy curls and a giggly laugh. On her fifth birthday, she asked for a “rainbow party” to include all the favorite colors of her friends and family.
Inspired by that sprit, her family and friends almost immediately dedicated themselves to living out her legacy by opening doors to the kind of life she loved - one lived outdoors and with her people.
They gave themselves a name - Sidney’s Rainbows - and went to work.
Every year, more than 1,000 children are killed in traffic-related crashes in the US, and many thousands more are severely injured. The impact on these communities is immeasurable.
Many families fear critical experiences like walking to school, riding a bike to the park, or running down in their neighborhood.
The resulting limits to mobility further clog our streets and damage the longterm health of our people.
We work with governments, businesses, and other non-profits to implement the solutions that exist in many countries.
To date, our programs have touched thousands. We’ve been covered in the media well over 100 times. We’ve successfully advocated for changes to streets design, including Andover’s adoption of Vision Zero and successful launch of its Complete Streets program. And, we’ve opened doors to activities that inspire kids to love active lifestyles, including Sidney’s Rainbow Runners, a multi-week running program that has served hundreds of children in our community.
